Book review: Do you want to know what we did to beat cancer?
We are often asked about treatment for various cancers as well as help with the side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. We are not allowed to give advice about treating cancer but can help minimise the side effects of treatment. We can also advise on lifestyle and diet protocols that can help reduce the chances of contracting cancer, all based on solid scientific research.
The main problem we have is lack of time to go into things in sufficient depth. There are a lot of diet, supplement, cleaning and body care products and lifestyle changes which are worth considering. However to understand why they are important requires a clear understanding of the science behind the causes of cancer.
This is where Robert Olifent’s book is so useful. He has done a massive amount of research into the science, which he presents in a straightforward, easy to follow way. He also describes the various steps his wife, Sue, took to handle her own cancer. She was diagnosed with terminal cancer several years ago, but is still alive, and very healthy. She refused the conventional treatments, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgery, in favour of lifestyle changes.
Olifent argues that the vast majority of cancers have environmental causes. The medical profession accepts that smoking is linked to lung cancer but appear unwilling to accept the same premise for other cancers, even those of the digestive system. Olifent says the single biggest factors are acidity in the body and hormone effecting chemicals. Acidity comes from over consumption of sugar and processed foods. Hormone effecting chemicals are found in plastics, growth hormones fed to cattle, and food additives, etc. When one considers that the incidence of cancer has risen from 1 in 30 of the population in 1900 to 1 in 2 today, it is hard to see any other explanation except environmental causes.
Olifent lists the steps his wife adopted. I only list them, the book provides a full rationale.
- Colon cleansing.
- Liver cleanse – the only herb Sue used was milk thistle, I think a wider range would have been more beneficial.
- Parasite elimination.
- Diet – Olifent provides very useful advice on thing to eat and things to avoid. Sue ate to make her body more alkaline, boost her immune system and increase her consumption of foods cancer cells don’t like. Olifent discusses dairy, wheat, fats and cooking methods.
- Supplementation – another valuable list.
- Potentially harmful products to avoid, in the home and for the body, with alternatives where possible.
- Exercise – I think this section is overly brief.
- Mental and emotional factors – thinking yourself well – again a lot of useful advice.
There is also interesting material on the politics of cancer. He discusses the roles of pharmaceutical and food companies. The medical profession, and the major cancer charities come in for a lot of criticism for their refusal to promote lifestyle issues.
I do have a couple of caveats about this book. The main one is the amount of repetition. Some things are stated at least five times in different chapters. I can understand him not wanting people to miss anything important but the book only has 158 pages and I think that if it is important enough for you to read it at all, you will probably read all of it. Some readers will also be put off by the author’s references to the importance of their Christianity. However, these can easily be ignored if one wishes and he certainly doesn’t base his wife’s recovery on her faith.
Though written specifically for those with cancer, I think this would be a very useful book for anyone experiencing a wide range of chronic or degenerative problems, such as arthritis or osteoporosis. It is also a valuable primer on disease prevention – anyone following the advice in this book will be healthier as a result. Robert eats substantially the same diet as Sue and found that his arthritis cleared up and he lost two stone without trying to.
I would commend this book very highly. It is available from Roots for £11-99. The Olifents are a Nottingham couple and hold regular events in the city – check www.cancer-acts.com for the latest news. People I know who have been to their events speak highly of them in terms of information gained and support provided.

As a qualified Medical Herbalist, I can advise on the best herbs for detoxification and helping with the side effects of treatment.
